The
Missions Ministry of
Donald and Carol Paige |
|
Our Calling
Over the past 4 years, God has given us a heart for missions. We went
on a mission trip to Brazil in 2002, and fell in love with the people
and the work. While we were there, we both sensed God calling us to
fulfill our part of the Great Commission through serving His people in
Latin America. The Mission Society currently has
missionaries serving that part of the world in Mexico, Costa Rica,
Peru and Paraguay. After much prayer and discernment, we
are feeling led toward Paraguay.
Why Paraguay?
With over 70% of the
population living in poverty, Paraguay is the poorest country in South
America. Although the country is nominally Catholic, few practice or own
Bibles. Less than 3% of the population is evangelical Christian. |
|
Ministries addressing the
physical and spiritual needs of the Paraguayans have already been
established in the area in which God is sending us. A Christian
school has been built to educate poor children and their families. A
Mobile Medical Unit brings basic medical care and eyeglasses to remote
areas. Wells are being dug to provide clean water. Churches
are being planted and the Gospel is being shared.
Between Donald’s training as a silversmith and Carol’s background in Social
Work, there is much that we have to offer. However, we firmly believe that
God wants us to become a part of what He is already doing in Paraguay. We
intend to go with open minds and open hearts, letting God lead us in our
ministry.

We’ve
Been Approved! |
|
This past June we attended the
Missionary Candidate week for the Mission Society for United Methodists.
It was an awesome time of fellowship and confirmation of our calling to
missions. We were approved as 1-year missionaries. This means that
we will have 3 months of language training (Spanish) in Costa Rica and serve
in Paraguay for 1 year. However, we are anticipating the possibility of
staying even longer.
The Mission Society is doing an
excellent job of preparing us for the field. In August we went through
10 days of training in Atlanta (Phase I). We are currently in Phase II
of the training process. We have several books to read on subjects such
as cultural adaptation and spiritual warfare. We have also begun raising
support. Our goal is to be able to leave for Costa Rica by next
September. Please read on to see what is needed to help us accomplish
this goal

Our Needs |
|
Prayers:
Most of all we need your prayers and moral support. Prayer is our most
powerful weapon against the enemy. Email us and let us know that you are
praying. It would be a great encouragement to us!
Monthly Support:
Next, we need your financial support. Our sending agency, MSUM, requires
that we have approximately 4-6 months of support in our account and the entire
year of support at least promised before they will allow us
to
go on the field. Our budget is $3,000 per month for our ministry
expenses.
Would you consider giving on a
monthly basis? If 100 or more people pledge $30 a month, we could be
well on our way.
Launching Funds:
There are also a number of costs that will be
incurred before we get to the field. These include 3 months of language
training in Costa Rica, a laptop computer, the cost of shipping our belongings
to Paraguay, travel to and from the field, an automobile and other
miscellaneous expenses. Our
launching funds are estimated to be about $20,000.
